The 10 Most Common Fashion Mistakes (And How to Fix Them)

Even the most stylish women have off days, and let’s face it, we’ve all looked back at an outfit and thought “what the f*** was I thinking?” If we’re being totally honest here, fashion is about experimentation, BUT there are still a few traps that can easily sabotage an entire look. Let’s talk common fashion mistakes and how to fix them.

Whether you’re refreshing/refining your wardrobe or simply just want to avoid some common style slip-ups, these are the 10 most frequent fashion mistakes, and how to effortlessly fix them, of course:

#1 Wearing Clothes That Don’t Fit Properly

Poorly fitting clothes, whether they be too big or too small disrupts the balance of an otherwise great ensemble. When clothing is too loose, or too tight then you may unintentionally draw attention to problem areas, pull or gape in areas that should otherwise not be pulled or gaped at, look sloppy, or end up getting devoured by your outfit.

The Fix: Trends right now are focused more on oversized clothing options. However, don’t ever size up to intentionally “hide” or intentionally size down hoping to “motivate.” Instead, embrace your body for where it is today, and also, ~*tailoring*~. A simple nibble at the waist or a shortened hem can elevate your entire silhouette.

#2 Underutilizing Undergarments

Layering can easily elevate an outfit by adding depth, texture, and seamless intention. When done right, layering can draw the eye in, enhance the structure and proportion of other items in the outfit, and makes any outfit versatile throughout the seasons. Think: A sleek slip dress paired over a form-fitting turtleneck.

The Fix: The right amount of layering can change the entire shape of your outfit. Invest in year-round friendly staple pieces for dimension and interest garnering touches all year round.

#3 Chasing Every Trend

I share a lot of ongoing trends or trend predictions in this space, HOWEVER, these are suggestions and not hard rules. Fashion is all about selecting and finding your own personal style. If something doesn’t align or feel like YOU, then skip it. Trying to force a trend to work for you that ultimately doesn’t feel right will show.

The Fix: Curate your look by choosing trends that complement your body type and aesthetic. Think: signature style over fast fashion chaos.

#4 Wearing Too Many Statement Pieces

Repeat after me: Less. Is. More. The purpose of a statement item is to capture the eye. Therefore, if you think about it, too many statement pieces can in turn create chaos. The eye doesn’t know where to look and when. Throwing on too many at one time can distract from the narrative of your look, causing your look to become confusing.

The Fix: Statement pieces are powerful, but one at a time is key. If you choose bold earrings, skip the chunky necklace. Neon green top? Go with uniform black for the rest. Let one piece do the talking.

#5 Neglecting Accessories Altogether

While over-accessorizing is a big no-no, utilizing NO accessories is equal in that sense. Accessories help to enhance, personalize, and complete a look. Statement pieces add visual interest, simple items such as belts can help to sculpt silhouettes and direct attention where it matters, and other items such as scarves/hats can help to tailor an outfit to an individual season.

The Fix: A simple outfit can become iconic with the right accessories. A structured handbag, sleek belt, or delicate gold jewelry can polish off your look with quiet elegance.

#6 Not Dressing for Your Body Type

Dressing for YOUR body type has nothing to do with societal norms or expectations. Dressing for your body type is important because it allows you to highlight your best features, achieve an elegant balance in your look, and most importantly to FEEL CONFIDENT in the way that you look. Clothes naturally fit and flow in a way that flatters your proportions.

The Fix: Learn your proportions and play to your strengths. For example, if you’re petite, avoid overwhelming your frame with bulky fabrics or ankle-cut boots that visually shorten your legs.

#7 Overlooking the Importance of Shoes

This one just BLOWS my mind. Maybe it’s because I have a closet overflowing with shoes that I 100% don’t NEED. Shoes are like the period at the end of a sentence. They COMPLETE your outfit. Your outfit could be an absolute masterpiece, and the wrong shoes will absolutely destroy all of it. Sneakers, making things more casual/laid back, heels bringing the polish and sophistication, and boots giving edge and structure.

The Fix: Your shoes should balance your outfit, not clash with it. Scuffed flats or dated heels can entirely ruin an ensemble. Stick to versatile staples like sleek loafers, minimalist heels, and quality sneakers.

#8 Forgetting to Check the Weather

If there is any fashion faux-pas that I am repeatedly guilty of, it is this one. I’m so stubborn in the sense that if I have a particular outfit in mind, I will try to force it even in the most adverse of weather formats. BUT, do as I say, not as I do my loves. Ensuring that your digs are weather appropriate is important not only for your comfort, but also for functionality. Dressing for the weather shows your awareness of your surroundings. It signals effort, thoughtfulness, and ability to adapt.

The Fix: Style should still be functional. Nothing kills a fashion moment like soaked suede boots or freezing in a sleeveless dress. Layer intelligently and carry a classic trench or wrap just in case.

#9 Mismatched Occasion Dressing

Have situational awareness. Dressing appropriately for the occasion not only lets others know that you understand the moment, but also shows that you BELONG in it. Understanding the appropriate style for the occasion shows respect, confidence, and communicates emotional intelligence. Never forget that style and fashion is a form of non-verbal communication. I promise, you can still look stunning within the boundaries of a dress code.

The Fix: Know your setting. Wearing a cocktail dress to a casual brunch or sweats to a networking event sends the wrong message. When in doubt, smart casual (see above) with elevated accessories is a safe bet.

#10 Ignoring Personal Style

This one goes hand-in-hand with #3. Fashion is just as much about self-expression as it is about aesthetics. When you wear clothing that feels authentic to you, it allows you to develop a connection between your clothes, your personality, and how you show up to the world. Style is timeless, and authenticity is memorable. Both are priceless (okay not really, but you get the point).

The Fix: Don’t dress for someone else’s aesthetic. Just because something looks good on Pinterest doesn’t mean it fits your lifestyle or vibe. Build a wardrobe that feels like you; confident, polished, and authentic.

Great style isn’t about perfection, it’s about intentional choices. By avoiding these common fashion faux pas, you can create a wardrobe that speaks to your individuality while staying fashionable and effortlessly you.
